Canada released various pieces of the DRAFT Fixed Wing Search and Rescue (FWSAR) RFP for review in September. The industry engagement sessions that followed gave FWSAR prospective bidders the opportunity to engage with Canada’s subject matter experts on issues that are important to the operational community. The conclusion of this industry engagement session should signal the end of the pre-RFP process. Team Spartan would like to congratulate the Government on reaching this milestone. We look forward to the release of the tender and submitting our bid.
On 14 November, the US Coast Guard (USCG) announced they had received the first of 14 C-27J Spartans destined for maritime SAR operations. These aircraft are being transferred from US Air Force (USAF) stocks.
The fleet is currently undergoing maintenance and modification for its new maritime patrol and SAR role with the USCG. The C-27Js are planned to be in service by 2016. It will be fitted with a new mission system and augmented sensors. The C-27Js will be replacing 18 Airbus C-235s previously planned but no longer required.
From expanding its international customer base through a new contract with the Peruvian Navy, to providing mission critical ISR in Canada’s fight against ISIL, General Dynamics Mission Systems – Canada is demonstrating the value of their Mission System. Canada’s investment into this home grown technology has resulted in both Canadian export growth and impactful results in theatre. See below for more information.
General Dynamics Mission Systems – Canada to Missionize Fleet of Multi-mission Helicopters for Peruvian Navy
GD Canada has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract to upgrade four SH-2G Super Seasprite helicopters with their Integrated Mission System (IMS). The upgraded aircraft will enhance the operational capability of the Peruvian Navy and its ability to perform a variety of roles, including search and rescue, and airborne surveillance and reconnaissance.
CP140 Auroras Singled Out for Praise by RCAF in Mission Against ISIL
In a Postmedia News interview with LCol Dave Devenney, Joint Task Force Iraq’s spokesman, the CP140 Aurora Aircraft is singled out for its role in providing the coalition forces with an enhanced picture of the battle space in Kuwait.
General Dynamics Mission Systems – Canada designed and delivered the Integrated Mission System (IMS) for the Aurora Incremental Modernization Project (AIMP) upgrades, which extends to 14 aircraft.
As Team Spartan’s mission system integrator, GD Canada will leverage this expertise by installing the same CP140 Integrated Mission System on the C-27J.
IMP Aerospace Joins Team Spartan
It is with great pleasure that Team Spartan announced the addition of IMP Aerospace to its team this Fall. IMP is a welcome addition to a very strong and competitive team composed of Alenia Aermacchi, General Dynamics Mission Systems – Canada, DRS Technologies, and KF Aerospace.
IMP Aerospace will modify the baseline C-27J aircraft into the final FWSAR operational configuration and support Alenia Aermacchi during the aircraft delivery phase.
IMP Aerospace's high value activities will include installation of General Dynamics Mission Systems Canada's mission system, installation of bubble windows, interior design modifications (including the addition of pallets, table, racks, and six additional seats) and installation of the EO/IR turret. Expanding Team Spartan's Atlantic Canada presence, these key industrial modifications will be performed at IMP Aerospace's full-service engineering and maintenance operation located in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Members of Team Spartan have had a consistent presence at recent Canadian defence and aerospace events.
In September, Alenia Aermacchi was happy to be back in Halifax to take part in this year’s DEFSEC show. Alenia and Team Spartan were showing why the C-27J is the right answer for the FWSAR program – while keeping show-goers caffeinated through sponsorship of the DEFSEC coffee cart. The team was also pleased to attend the 13th annual Aerospace and Defense Industries Association of Nova Scotia Dinner.
Italian Armed Forces Day Celebration
Italian Armed Forces Day, or Giorno delle Forze Armate, is an annual celebration on November 4th to recognize and celebrate the 1918 Austro-Hungarian ceasefire, and thus the end of the First World War on the Italian front. In honour of this event, the Ambassador of Italy in Canada, H.E. Gian Lorenzo Cornado, and the Italian Defense and Defense Cooperation Attaché, Maj. Gen. Giovanni Fantuzzi, hosted a reception at the Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa. Team Spartan was a lead sponsor of this event, which provided Canadian government and industry an opportunity to come together on this national day of historic recognition.
Although the Ottawa Senators lost in a shoot-out to the Winnipeg Jets, the Canadian Armed Forces Appreciation Night provided Team Spartan with the chance to thank Canada’s men and women in uniform. We were pleased to share our tickets with deserving soldiers from across the military.
Most recently, the team was a sponsor of the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC) Aerospace Summit on November 18 and 19th in Ottawa. Our team enjoyed the opportunity to further engage and collaborate with Canadian aerospace leaders.
